In the short term there are many ways like those mentioned in this section of Yahoo answers, however in the long run the only way we can curtail the demand for energy is an strict control in human birth rates. Ever wondered why we have high oil prices? pollution? it is because 6.7 billion of people demand everything: from electricity consumption to disposing of tons of garbage per person every day. Sounds ironic but the higher progress in human development the higher the negative impact in our planet will be if we don’t see the bottom cause of our environmental problem.
